EFFECTIVE FRAME LOAD
We offer a broad range of main tube configurations to suit custom frame designs based on individual rider and with riding styles.  We encourage you to work with us to select the tube set needed to achieve the ride and frame qualities you want.  If you do not find a set that meets your needs, contact us.
Adjusted Frame load Calculate an Effective Frame Load (EFL) based on the performance and rider characteristics you specify.  Starting with the rider's weight, add and subtract adjustments based on riding characteristics and adjustments listed.  Multiple adjustments are additive and cumulative.  If you have questions, contact us to walk through your calculations.
Adjustments Ride Style/Maintenance Adjustment
Time trial (TT) oriented, solo less technical handling. Subtract 15 lbs
Willing to trade increased performance through  weight reduction for reduction in frame toughness and frame stiffness Subtract 15 lbs
Want low maintenance and greater frame stiffness and are willing to trade some weight Add 20 lbs
Road racer, need extra lateral stability or stiffer handling.  To make it extra stiff, double the adjustment. Add 20 lbs
Sprinter, need strong rear triangle torque Add 40 lbs down tube, 25 lbs seat tube
Frame Size Adjustment
Frame size 48 and under Subtract 30 lbs1
Frame size 50 - 52 Subtract 15 lbs1
Frame size 60 - 64 Add 20 lbs1
Frame size 66 - 70 Add 40 lbs1

Main Tube Selection
After estimating the Effective Frame Load, look up the recommended main tube set below.  Larger Effective Frame Load designs use larger diameter tubes.  Increased tube sections (and sectional areas) have higher yield strength and sectional stiffness (bending resistance) and enable a frame to support greater load with greater stability.  Compare the individual tube properties (tube yield strength and tube bending stiffness) in the tube specifications.

1This adjustment is in addition to any rider weight included in the base calculation.  It strictly addresses the change in stiffness needed proportional to frame dimensional change.  It assumes a certain normal range of rider weight in this scaling.  Unusual rider weights should be noted and included in any design discussion.
